Balata Garden's 40th Anniversary: A Unique Botanical Adventure in Martinique

In 2026, the Balata Garden celebrates its 40th anniversary of opening to the public. For forty years, this iconic Martinique landmark has established itself as one of the most beautiful tropical gardens in the Caribbean (and, objectively, the world). With its Creole heritage, remarkable plant collections, spectacular viewpoints, and preserved biodiversity, the Balata Garden continues to enchant thousands of visitors every year.
A look back at the history of a garden that has become an international benchmark.
When the Artist Created Balata

The story of the Balata Garden is first and foremost that of one man: Jean-Philippe Thoze. A landscape architect, horticulturist, and artist at heart, he has harbored a fascination for tropical plants since childhood.
Throughout his travels around the world, he collected numerous plant species. On this family land located along the Route de la Trace, he gradually shaped an exceptional garden where Martinican vegetation and plants from tropical regions worldwide harmoniously blend.
His goal was simple: to create a place where nature, aesthetics, and the transmission of botanical knowledge converge.
1986: Opening to the Public
After 4 years of work and development, the Balata Garden officially opened its doors to the public in 1986.
From its beginnings, the site captivated with its unique character. Unlike classical gardens, Balata offers a true immersion into a lush tropical world. Visitors discover winding paths among palms, heliconias, bromeliads, and many rare species.
Quickly, the garden became a beloved spot for Martinicans and an essential stop for visitors wishing to discover another side of Martinique.
The Creole House, Historical Heart of the Garden

It's impossible to talk about the Balata Garden without mentioning its traditional Creole house.
A true central point of the site, it bears witness to the family history of the place and remains a landmark for visitors today. Its typical architecture, open verandas, and lush surroundings contribute to the garden's unique charm.
Over the years, the house has become a place for meetings, exchanges, and discovery of Martinican heritage. It regularly hosts exhibitions, cultural events, and activities that strengthen the link between nature, history, and artistic creation.
An Exceptional Botanical Collection
The Balata Garden is recognized far beyond Martinique's borders today, thanks to the richness of its plant collections.
The site gathers over a thousand tropical plants belonging to hundreds of different species. Majestic palms, delicate orchids, remarkable trees, vibrant tropical flowers, and aquatic plants create a landscape in perpetual evolution throughout the seasons.
This diversity makes the garden a true plant conservatory and a powerful tool for raising awareness about biodiversity preservation.
Discreet but Omnipresent Wildlife

The Balata Garden is more than just its plants. The richness of its vegetation also offers refuge to numerous animal species.
Visitors can observe hummingbirds feeding on tropical flowers, anoles climbing on heliconias, or even spot the Matoutou Falaise, a perfectly harmless spider endemic to Martinique.
The garden thus forms a living ecosystem where flora and fauna interact closely. This biodiversity largely contributes to the peaceful and immersive atmosphere that defines the visitor experience.
The Canopy, a new way to discover the garden
As it has evolved, the Balata Garden has enriched the visitor experience while preserving the spirit envisioned by its founder.
One of the most significant developments is the creation of the canopy walkway. Suspended among the tall mahogany trees, the walkways offer a completely different perspective of the garden.
From these heights, visitors discover the diversity of plants from a new angle while enjoying exceptional panoramic views of the Pitons du Carbet, Fort-de-France Bay, and the surrounding tropical forest.
This experience quickly became one of the symbols of the Balata Garden.
Some of the most beautiful panoramic views in Martinique

Located in the hills above Fort-de-France, the garden enjoys a prime location.
Throughout the visit, several viewpoints allow visitors to admire the lush green landscapes of the island's interior, the peaks of the Pitons du Carbet, and part of Fort-de-France Bay.
This blend of natural landscapes and landscaped features fully contributes to the site's reputation and its success with visitors from around the world.
Forty years later, the same passion
40 years after its opening, the Balata Garden continues to evolve while remaining true to Jean-Philippe Thoze's vision.
Each year, the teams maintain, enrich, and enhance this exceptional plant heritage to offer visitors an ever more immersive experience. New plantings, events, and awareness campaigns help keep this unique place alive.
Today recognized as one of the most remarkable gardens in the Caribbean and cherished by visitors from around the world, the Balata Garden continues its story with the same ambition as in its early days: to share the beauty of the plant world and convey the wonder that nature provides.
